Day 53: LEARN
Mantra: Conscious play, even as an adult, is an exciting way to learn more about myself and the world.
The Sacred Art of Play: Learning Through Joy
As children, play is our natural state of learning—every game, every dance, every make-believe story shaping how we understand the world. But somewhere along the path to adulthood, play is often dismissed as frivolous, replaced by responsibilities and rigid routines. Yet, science and ancient wisdom alike reveal that conscious play is not only vital for joy, but also for self-discovery and wisdom.
Neurological studies show that engaging in playful activities boosts cognitive function, creativity, and emotional intelligence. According to research in Frontiers in Psychology, play stimulates the brain's prefrontal cortex, enhancing problem-solving skills, adaptability, and even resilience. Engaging in activities like dancing, storytelling, or even imaginative role-play keeps the mind sharp, reduces stress, and deepens emotional well-being.
Spiritually, play has long been seen as a gateway to divine connection. Ancient Egyptian priestesses would sing and dance under the moon, believing joy was a sacred offering to the gods. In Yoruba traditions, storytelling and laughter were viewed as spiritual medicine, strengthening communal bonds and deepening one's relationship with the ancestors. Even now, modern spiritual practices like ecstatic dance, laughter meditation, and creative visualization harness play as a way to access higher consciousness.
When we play with intention, we open portals of learning that logic alone cannot unlock. We discover new aspects of ourselves, break free from limitations, and embrace life with curiosity. In essence, play is a language of the soul—a sacred way to both explore and express the beauty within us.
Reflect & Embody
What is an activity that once brought you joy but you’ve abandoned in adulthood? How can you reintroduce it into your life?
How do you feel when you allow yourself to be playful? Does it change your perception of yourself?
What new things have you learned about yourself when engaging in lighthearted, joyful experiences?
Go on, girl—play like your spirit depends on it, because it does. 💃🏾✨💖
